MAKE A RUBBING

City-wide public art project inviting passersby to make a rubbing of a woodcut, and to use the printmaking process of frottage to promote ideas of free education. The blocks are mounted on boarded up business windows on Broad and Cary streets, and on a damaged kiosk at the Institute of Contemporary Art. The content on the woodcuts responds to American news headlines from July 2020. The large woodcut is inspired by Octavia Butler's science fiction alien race from the Xenogenesis Trilogy, the Oankali. The woodcut imagines the blanket octopus as the earthly representation of the Oankali. The project traces the reliefs found on ancient ruins that tell the story of a civilization, and encourages the recording of an image in an accessible, Polaroid-like encapsulation of a moment.
